Detox- it’s a word that has been thrown around a lot as of late, but many of us don’t have a clear understanding of what it means and how it truly affects our bodies.
Think of your body as a home plumbing system. We are constantly putting stuff down the pipes. Most of the time, the pipes work well and remove what we throw at them. However, from time to time, things get plugged up, and we need to do some work to get them back in working order. Our body functions on a very similar level. Our intestines, liver and many other parts of our body work hard to remove the toxins and waste we put into our systems, and just like the pipes in your home, they can get backed up.
So what happens when we are “backed up”? Our bodies look for another way to eliminate the toxins – our skin! You may already be aware of the fact that our skin is our body’s largest organ, but it’s also the emergency exit for our elimination systems. When there’s a build of toxins and waste that can’t escape via the digestion process, our bodies push these bad boys out through our pores. Generally speaking, this process is completely natural and healthy for our body, but too much of this can cause chronic skin conditions like cystic acne, rosacea, and eczema (especially if our skin is also in a state of repair).
Modern marketing leads us to believe that our skin operates as an independent function of the body. Truth is, your skin depends on whole body health, and your body relies on your skin to operate on a balanced level just as much!
Here’s how to recognize if your skin needs a detox
- You’ve been using harsh, pore-clogging products. These are products that include petrochemicals and other pore-clogging ingredients. It also includes skincare, cosmetics, body care, hair care, and sunscreen.
- You’re using green products but are wondering if they might be part of the issue. If you know the products you’re using right now pass the “clean test” but you aren’t convinced that they are supporting your skin’s ability to heal itself – or worse, they could be contributing to breakouts, it’s possibly time to hit the reset button.
- Your skin care routine has hit a plateau. Essentially you’ve stopped seeing progress in your skin with the current routine you’re using. If you’re happy with your skin and it’s balanced and healthy then this doesn’t necessarily pertain to you. Keep up the good work if that’s the case. Here’s a past blog we’ve posted on plateaus and what you can do in these cases: What to do if you’ve hit a plateau in your skin care journey
- Congestion has got you down. Sebum is a good thing! It helps to protect and shield our skin from infections, but just like most things, too much of a good thing isn’t always good. When produced in excess, this sticky bacteria can harden and cause blockages leading to stretched pores, pesky blackheads, and uneven/dull skin tone. Detoxing is one of the best and fastest ways to help get these hard buildups out of your pores. Want to know how you can boost the process and prevent congestion from returning? Give “Is congestion causing your acne?” a read!
- You’re under a stress mess! When our bodies are under stress they produce certain hormones that help combat the internal feelings of panic and survival. These hormones are put to use then expelled like other toxins in our bodies. When we are constantly in a stress mode, this production goes into overdrive and our skin is called to the rescue to help release the build-up, most commonly in the form of stress sweat. This type of sweat contains hormones and oils that can lead to breakouts if our skin isn’t in a state where it can handle the influx of operation.
- You’ve got your skin care routine on-point, but you’ve made the choice to detoxifying your whole life! You’re decluttering the home, releasing toxic relationships, focusing on your internal health, and doing a basic overhaul to create a healthy and balanced lifestyle. This type of skin detox isn’t so much about clearing your skin of built up toxins (you can already check that one of your list). It’s more about establishing a connection between the mental and physical parts of a life detox. Our mind recognizes the changes we are making and it know when parts have been ignored. Adding a skin detox to the mix will help to fill that void.
If you’ve identified with any of these situations, it’s time for a skin detox! Best part- we’ve got you covered. The Detox Skin Care Kit contains the products you need to make it happen.
If you leave this blog with anything, we hope that you’ll always remember that no matter where you and your skin care end up, there’s always a reset button.
Until next time- stay radiant!
