🦠 Many think bacteria are the root cause of acne and focus their acne treatments on controlling "acne-causing bacteria." ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🦠 While keeping bacteria under control can help, concentrating our efforts here is like trying to stop a rock from rolling down a hill. It's much easier to move the rock away from the cliff's edge rather than try to stop it in mid-tumble!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🦠 Studies have shown that the very start of a blemish doesn't contain bacteria at all! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, how does acne start if bacteria aren't the root cause of acne? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The answer: ⁣⁣
🧨 Damage to our sebum (our skin's natural oils).⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Say what?⁣⁣
→ Our oil (sebum) is vulnerable to oxidative damage.⁣⁣
→ When oxidative damage happens, the fatty acid squalene (a key component of sebum) forms a highly pore-clogging substance called squalene peroxide.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Still with me?⁣⁣
→ The squalene peroxide produced due to oxidative damage blocks your pores.⁣⁣
→ These blocks trap a mix of bacteria, dead skin cells, hardened oil, debris, etc., inside your pores.⁣⁣
→ So the bacteria gets trapped in your pores, but it wasn't the reason your pores got clogged in the first place!⁣⁣
→ The damaged oil creates clogs in your pores.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
How do we stop oxidative damage to our sebum?⁣⁣
→ We stop oxidative damage by looking at what creates the conditions for sebum to get damaged in the first place!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For that, we need to look at⁣⁣
→ Hormone imbalances⁣⁣
→ Inflammation inside & out⁣⁣
→ Sources of topical damage⁣⁣
⁣⁣

🦠🧱 Sticky Cells (Dead Skin Cells + Sticky Sebum) can trigger acne!⁣

Why:⁣
→ What's sticky is sebum (the oil on our skin) after it oxidizes (aka becomes damaged - we'll talk more about this next week)⁣
→ The sticky sebum glues dead skin cells that are supposed to shed off to our skin - including inside the walls of our pores (because skin sheds there too).⁣
→ Dead skin cells that stick around (literally) absorb oil and become a hard plug that attracts bacteria. This process already sparks inflammation (and remember, acne is an inflammatory condition. More inflammation = more acne). Once bacteria show up, more inflammation is triggered, and we have a full-blown bad-news situation on our skin.⁣

🌼✨🌼 What to do about it: 🌼✨🌼⁣
⁣
✨ Exfoliate regularly to give your skin a helping hand and slough off dead skin cells. Check out our PHA Scrub for a gentle option.⁣

✨ Combat sticky sebum (that glue that keeps dead skin cells hanging around) using skincare high in linoleic-containing oils. ⁣
⁣
✨ Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that acne-prone skin is deficient in. Providing it to acne-prone skin calms inflammation, encourages natural exfoliation, and can inhibit activity from 5α-reductase (an enzyme that encourages your skin to pump out more oil). ⁣
